Brazing is a solid-state joining technology. Unlike fusion welding, the base metals never reach their melting point. A filler alloy whose solidus lies below that of the parent material is inserted between the faying surfaces. The assembly is heated to a temperature above the filler liquidus but below the base-metal solidus. Once molten, the filler wets, spreads and dissolves a controlled amount of the substrate, then flows into the joint gap by capillary action. Metallurgical inter-diffusion between filler and base metal produces a continuous, void-free bond line that seals the channel network while preserving the dimensional tolerances critical for high-efficiency heat transfer.
